Movement Building

The Collaborative is part of a broader movement to improve the health and working conditions while protecting the rights of low-wage immigrant workers. For the nail salon industry, our vision is to transform the nail salon industry from a low-wage and toxic industry to one that is safe and healthy for all, and that recognizes the rights and dignity of all workers.

Creating systemic change requires alliances and intersections with a range of diverse communities and groups. We are currently partnering with Adhikaar and the National Employment Law Project in New York City to strengthen bicoastal base building and organizing efforts, and coordinate campaigns that elevate an empowered nail salon workforce that can raise its voices and advocate for healthier and just salons.

The Collaborative is also a founding partner and co-convener of the National Healthy Nail and Beauty Salon Alliance with Women’s Voices for the Earth. Founded in 2007, the Alliance is a national network of partners committed to advancing the health, safety, and rights of salon workers through strategic collaborations, policy and industry advocacy, and federal agency engagement.

In November 2014, the Alliance organized its third annual Healthy Salons Week of Action in Washington DC, hosting a delegation of 25 advocates, salon workers and allies to advocate for increased salon worker health, safety and rights with regulatory agencies, government officials, Congressional staffers and funders.
