On January 17th, 2018 the Collaborative was awarded California's highest environmental honor, the Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA). We were thrilled that the GEELA was co-presented to us by California State Senator Nancy Skinner (SD-9 Oakland, Richmond) who commended the Collaborative's work in having nearly 200 salons certified in Healthy Nail Salon Recognition Programs statewide, and for establishing creative and innovative programs like our Microloan Pilot Program which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The annual GEELA program is administered by the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA), in partnership with:
- Natural Resources Agency
- Department of Food and Agriculture
- State Transportation Agency
- Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency
- Government Operations Agency
- Labor Workforce and Development Agency
- Health and Human Services Agency
We are proud to have established community based mechanisms of change to positively impact the environmental, economic, social, and health injustices faced by nail salon workers throughout the state. Our receipt of the state's highest environmental honor is at its roots a reflection of our outstanding partners, collaborations and the brave workers who have come forward to boldly serve as catalysts of change within their community. We are humbled and honored to receive this prestigious award.
We also congratulate our fellow awardees representing a wide range of public agencies and private industries.
